How Long Does It Take to Learn to Fly a Paramotor?

Powered paragliding isn’t just one of the most accessible forms of flight, it’s also one of the fastest to learn! You don’t need a license, a background in aviation, or even months and months of flight school.

With a good training program, most people can go from total beginner to a confident, solo pilot in just over a week!

So, how long exactly does it take to learn to fly a paramotor?

Spoiler: It’s faster than you think.

How Many Days Does It Take to Learn to Fly a Paramotor?

The timeline to learn how to paramotor on your own is surprisingly short. Most training programs teach students to fly a paramotor in 8–9 days.

Carolina PPG offers foot launch and trike launch powered paragliding training. We take every precaution to ensure that students are safe and confident in their PPG skills so they can launch, maneuver, and land their paramotors skillfully. Depending on your schedule,  we offer two scheduling options for students:

Week-Long Training
Our full-time training typically runs for 8 to 9 days, from Saturday through the following Sunday. This format allows students to immerse themselves in the process and build their skills each day.

Weekend Training
If your schedule isn’t as open or you prefer to space things out, no worries. We also offer a Saturday/Sunday format spread across 3–4 weekends. You’ll cover the same material, just at a steady pace.

What to Expect in Your First Paramotor Training Course

Knowing what to expect can ease a lot of the nerves you might have going into training. From learning how the gear works to experiencing your first solo flight, here’s what you can look forward to during your PPG training:

  • Classroom Sessions: We kick things off indoors, where you’ll learn the basics like airspace rules, weather, safety, and how the equipment works.
  • Motor Simulator: Before you fly, you’ll get strapped into a stationary motor setup. This is where you’ll learn throttle control, weight-shift techniques, seat transitions, and landing posture.
  • Glider Simulator: You’ll also use a suspended harness to practice steering and brake input. This helps build muscle memory before working with a real wing.
  • Ground Handling: Once you’re comfortable, you’ll head outside to work with an actual wing. You’ll learn how to inflate, control, and steer it on the ground.
  • In-Air Training: When you’re ready, you’ll take to the skies under instructor supervision. Your first flights will focus on takeoff technique, throttle control, smooth turns, and safe landings.
  • A Supportive Community: Training at Carolina PPG isn’t a solo journey. You’ll be learning alongside others who are just as excited (and maybe a little nervous) as you are. Many students walk away with new friendships and a built-in flying crew!

Factors That Affect How Quickly You Learn to Paramotor

While training usually takes about 8 to 9 days, the exact timeline can vary based on a few key factors:

  • Weather: Paramotoring is a weather-dependent sport. High winds or rain can pause training days, but safety always comes first.
  • Progress: Everyone learns at a different pace. Sometimes we’ll extend a course by a day or two to help a student feel fully confident. On the other hand, if you’re progressing quickly and meet all the requirements, we may complete your course and even issue your certification early!
  • Consistency: It’s incredibly important to stay consistent with your training schedule. Gaps between sessions can slow down progress. especially in the early stages. Regular attendance can help you get the hang of things faster.

Getting Ready for Training: What to Pack and Prepare

Getting ready for paramotor training doesn’t require a ton of gear, but a little preparation goes a long way! Here’s a quick checklist to help you show up prepared and ready to fly:

  • Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing (think athletic wear or long sleeves you can move in)
  • Boots or running shoes with traction and ankle support
  • Sun protection (like sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat)
  • A good water bottle and snacks
  • A notebook or journal to take notes
  • A positive mindset!

One thing you won’t have to worry about? Bringing your own gear. We’ve got that covered! Carolina PPG provides all flight equipment during training, including helmets, wings, and motors (unless otherwise arranged).
